In Spanish Colonial Era (1690-1820), students in grades 6-8 will explore Spain's efforts to settle and control Texas, a challenging region where indigenous tribes held significant power. This book examines Spain's attempts to impose its influence through establishing missions, their struggles, and the ultimate failure to maintain control over the territory.

In the 1690s, Spain set up missions across Texas to convert local Native Americans to Spanish culture and create loyal subjects for the Spanish crown. However, these missions largely failed as most indigenous peoples, including the powerful Comanches, Apaches, and Caddos, resisted adopting Spanish ways of life. Additionally, Spain's limited financial support from Mexico City left these missions underfunded and ineffective. By the 1790s, Spain began to abandon the mission system as it became clear that they had failed to attract or influence the native population.

Throughout the 1700s and early 1800s, the tribes of Texas remained dominant, controlling much of the land that Spain had hoped to colonize. The Comanches and Apaches posed constant challenges, increasing their raids on Spanish settlements like San Antonio. By the early 1800s, the Spanish presence in Texas had grown weak, and the Mexican War for Independence in 1810 further destabilized Spain's fragile hold on the region.

As the violence of the independence war raged, Spain struggled to maintain order in Texas. Raids by Comanches and Apaches intensified, pushing the Spanish presence in Texas to the brink of collapse. By 1820, Spain was so overwhelmed that the leadership in San Antonio even considered abandoning the province altogether. At this critical moment, Moses Austin arrived in San Antonio with a proposal to bring American colonists into Texas, marking the beginning of a new era.

Aligned with US History curriculum standards for grades 6-8, this book provides an engaging overview of the Spanish Colonial Era and its significance in Texas history. Through illustrations, maps, and accessible text, students will understand how Spain's attempts to colonize Texas ultimately set the stage for the region's future transformation.
